Dear Steve:
Your {\it New York Times} op ed certainly upholds the party line.
Enclosed is a letter that I sent right after their editorial in which they
criticized Bennett's speech along the same lines that you did. You
didn't mention that there were any demonstrations or siege of the
Academic Senate meeting, so I assume you consider them irrelevant
and will be surprised if there are yet more demands supported by
demonstrations. The Academic Senate resolution prescribes that
ethnic and sex consideratons go into choosing the committee that
will supervise the course, but some sorehead seems to have pointed
out that this violates a previous Stanford Faculty regulation against
using race and sex as a criterion.
I enclose also a transcript of the debate between Kennedy and
Bennett. As you will see, he doesn't quite fit your model of a
Republican cabinet member. I enclose also a piece by Sidney Hook,
whose academic credentials are senior to any of ours.
\closing
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
Professor
